Staff Therapist, Center City, Philadelphia, PA officeInstitute for Sex Therapy
215-382-6680 ext. 4266
Tom Winner, MFT, loves working with individuals, couples, and families from adolescence on. He strives to create a safe, supportive, and insightful therapeutic environment in which clients can explore their problems, find creative solutions, and most importantly grow both as individuals and together as couples and families.
Tom uses a collaborative approach to therapy that incorporates elements of Emotion Focused (EFT), Narrative, Bowenian, Structural, Cognitive/Behavioral, and Social Constructionist models. He aims to provide his clients with creative perspectives on difficult problems, developing new approaches and solutions that often were not previously considered. He helps couples communicate their emotional, sexual, and day-to-day needs to their partners in a way that can be heard and understood.
While Tom has experience working with a wide variety of issues and challenges, he specializes in premarital counseling/preventative couples therapy, identity crisis, sexual minorities (including LGBTQ, gender queer, atypical sexual interests and fetishes, and non-monogamous relationships), couples in college or graduate school, and male sexual dysfunction (including performance problems, erectile dysfunction, and premature ejaculation).
Tom graduated from Swarthmore College with a BA in psychology and minors in film and English literature. After spending two years teaching and tutoring, he completed his master's in marriage and family therapy with a concentration in sex therapy at Thomas Jefferson University and Council for Relationships, receiving honors for his thesis on the connection between in-process emotion, physiological experience, and therapeutic outcomes. After graduating, Tom joined CFR as a staff therapist working at both the Institute for Sex Therapy and the Center City offices.
