Margaret Shapiro, LCSW, BCD
Assistant Director, University City Office & Senior Therapist, Wynnewood Office; 215-382-6680 ext. 3110
Margaret Shapiro, LCSW has been a couples, individual and family therapist for twenty-eight years, and has worked at the Council for Relationships for seventeen years. She particularly enjoys working with:
- Pre-marital couples
- Inter-ethnic, inter-religious and inter-racial couples
- Families with adult children who wish to improve their relationships
- Couples and families where conversations about money are problematic
- Individuals of college age or older who are struggling with anxiety, depression and relationship concerns.
- Single parents and Stepfamilies
Her focus is to understand the present concerns of clients and to facilitate conversations so that each person feels more fully heard and understood. Clear and empathic communication is essential before deeper misunderstandings and problems can be constructively addressed. Contextual and family of origin influences are discussed to understand their impact on the present situation, and to illuminate what is perpetuating discomfort and unhappiness. Her style is interactive and conversational, while using theories and techniques from various schools of therapy that are practical and useful.
She has spoken locally and nationally, in addition to publishing articles, about the impact of money on relationships. She has also spoken locally and nationally about working with asylum seekers and immigrants. She received her MSW from the University of Chicago and has studied family and couples therapy at Cambridge Hospital in Mass. and in Philadelphia. She also supervises students and experienced therapists.
She can be reached at 215-382-6680 x3110 on Tues., Wed. and Thurs. and sees clients at University City (Tues and Thurs.) and in Wynnewood (Wed.) from 1:00-8:00PM.
