Vacation-Saving Tips for Parents

Michele Marsh, PhD
August 9, 2004

Parents often return from vacation exhausted and frustrated, having spent more time than usual with the kids and less time with each other or alone than they had hoped. Here are some tips for ensuring a fun family vacation and some special time for the parents who plan and pay for it all:

  1. Remember to talk ahead of time about what YOU (the parent) would like to do on vacation. Tell your partner what you look forward to and ask her or him to tell you the same. Talk frankly with your partner about what s/he needs and try to balance time with the kids, time with each other, and time alone.

  2. Assess the situation: is it possible to do what you want and spend special time with the kids too? Often the answer is YES if you plan your priorities into the vacation in advance.

  3. BE EXPLICIT about your needs: if you really need some beach time alone, say so. Figure out with your partner WHEN you may be able to walk alone or steal away for an hour to read with the waves lapping at your feet.

  4. OFFER TO SWAP the kids back and forth occasionally, giving them "special time" with each parent, and giving each parent the ever-coveted "peace and quiet". If "peace and quiet" is not what you crave, substitute a movie with a friend or relative, or some other special activity you desire.

  5. FIGHT THE GUILT that sometimes comes with getting what you want. Especially if you're a working parent and don't feel you spend enough time with your children, try to realize that making yourself happy will likely help you create more happy times with the kids too, both on the vacation and afterwards.

  6. CHECK THE RESOURCES available BEFORE you arrive: childcare, special kids' activities, etc. may need to be reserved.

  7. RELAX YOUR MIND AND BODY, and return refreshed from your trip!

  8. If you are a SINGLE PARENT, planning a vacation with a friend or family member (whose children are close in age to yours) may be just the ticket. Follow the above hints with your companion, and have a great time!
